To start, let’s talk about the food. It’s hard to mess up Italian, but they didn’t nail it for sure.
The pizza crust was crispy on the bottom and more doughy on the top, but there wasn’t much flavor. The pasta sauce was relatively bland. The pasta itself was mushy, and there was a lot of it. If you go, and order a pasta, it’s probably best to share. The food was fine, just not great. The bill was standard as well. For two pizzas, drinks, and a salad it was about $60. Our service was slow, and we felt like we were a bother to our waitress.
Despite all this, Filippi’s is a good place to take families. We had a group of nine and they easily had enough room for us and another large family. They also had parking nearby which isn’t always the case in downtown San Diego. It was nice to be able to sit and chat.
It was a little weird that we had to go through a store before we got to the restaurant, and the food wasn’t great. Filippi’s Pizza Grotto is nothing exceptional. The food was standard. It’s an okay place to take a family, but there are other restaurants around. We do not recommend it.
